Arlington's Museum Collection holds more than 40,000 objects and artifacts, including archaeological materials, historic furnishings and framed and decorative arts. The Museum Collection includes original paintings, fine china and original documents associated with the Custis and Lee families and George and Martha Washington. For more information, see here. Furniture
The mahogany Plantation Desk was used by Robert E. Lee while assigned to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Office in Baltimore to supervise the construction of Fort Carroll (1848 - 1852). In 1913, the desk was moved to Arlington. In 1975, the desk was used by President Gerald R. Ford when signing Senate Joint Resolution 23, legislation restoring posthumously full rights of citizenship to Robert E. Lee. Although Lee had submitted a signed Oath of Allegiance to federal officials 1865, subsequently it was not acted upon. NPS Catalog Number: ARHO 202.
The Square Grand Piano on display is representative of a similar instrument once located at Arlington. Archival documents reveal that a pianoforte manufactured by Nunns & Clark (1821-1838), a New York City builder, once was at Arlington. When the instrument left Arlington is unknown. Because they were smaller than a Standard Grand Piano, the Square Grand was a popular addition to the parlors of mid-nineteenth century European and American families of means. The instruments had a subdued and sweet sound, making it ideal for home use. The displayed instrument, built in 1837 by Knabe & Gaehle, Baltimore, was constructed using Mahogany veneers and Rosewood.
